Join us celebrate Women and Girls refereeing this Female Football Week

Updated: 6 hours ago

We are excited to be providing a range of opportunities to celebrate girls and women refereeing as part of Female Football Week 2025, 3rd to 11th May.

Female Football Week is a national initiative for recognising the vital role women play in football, including as match officials.

Please join our celebrations by attending any of our events below, cheering on The Third Team at Female Football Festival hubs across The Shire, and sharing these opportunities with your community. If you have any questions, please reach out to Sarah at femalerefs@ssfra.org.au.

Check out what the women and girls of SSFRA are saying about refereeing and details of our 2025 Female Football Week events below.

Learn more about refereeing in the Shire at our free refereeing course

As part of SSFRA's Female Football Week 2025 celebrations, we are excited to host another free refereeing course for women and girls. Whether you're looking to refresh your current skills or introduce your friends, teammates, or family members to refereeing, this is the perfect opportunity to learn, connect, and take the first step into officiating football.

The evening will cover the outdoor practical module of the Junior and Senior Match Official courses (JMO and SMO, respectively) and details about refereeing in The Shire (e.g., pay, availability, processes). There is no cost of attending and no obligation to referee.

New referees as well as those looking to brush up on their knowledge in a supportive, all-female environment are welcome.

Date: Tuesday 6th May 2025

Time:  6pm to 8pm

Location: Seymour Shaw, Miranda Magpies Clubhouse

Who: This event is open to all women and girls interested in knowing more about refereeing. For example, those who

  • Are a lover of football keen to earn some money through the sport they enjoy

  • Are a Miniroos or Summer Soccer referee considering what could be next

  • Are a mum, aunt, grandma, sister, daughter of a ref keen to learn more

  • Have refereed previously and are considering getting involved again

  • Currently referee and seeking to refresh their practical skills and understanding of SSFRA processes

What: This event will involve light practical activities outdoors and general information session indoors. There will be opportunity to meet current women and girls part of SSFRA.

Note, for anyone interested in refereeing, attending this course will tick off one third of the Football Australia accredited Level 4 referee course. Additional information about the process for becoming a referee with SSFRA are available at https://www.ssfra.org.au/join.

Connect with fellow referees and receive coaching from FNSW referees

We invite all female referees to join us for a Connection & Coaching Session — a night designed to celebrate, strengthen, and connect women and girls in refereeing.

The evening will feature:

  • Q&A with special guest Chloe Gray

Chloe is the FNSW Referee Branch Coordinator, a FNSW RDP coach, and 2x WNPL Grandfinal Referee. We'll cover her journey, career highlights, and advice for aspiring referees.

  • Coaching Theory Session with Zoe Benjamin

Gain valuable insights into Level 3 refereeing concepts, with a focus on positioning, player management, and foul identification.

  • Open chat with light food

Join in on an open floor discussion, sharing experiences, asking questions, and discussing what's next for girls and women refereeing in The Shire.
